How can small, thoughtful interventions bring about a broader transformation of space? In conversation with Gregor Kocijančič for Mladina magazine, Ana Kreč and Jure Hrovat reflected on the past ten years of SVET VMES’s work. They discussed the potential of overlooked in-between spaces, the gradual transformation of schools, and our responsibility towards the existing built environment.
The conversation traces the practice’s evolution from small interventions to larger and more complex commissions: the gradual renewal of Gimnazija Poljane, a timber kindergarten in Kočevje, the renovation and exhibition design of the Slovenian School Museum, and exhibitions including "Universum Plečnik" at Ljubljana’s Museum of Architecture and Design - MAO and "City on the Border" at EPIC in Nova Gorica. The Kočevje kindergarten received a Plečnik Medal and a Golden Pencil award in 2023, while the Slovenian School Museum received the Valvasor distinction for Slovenian Museum of the Year in 2026. Across these different scales, the practice explores how architecture can support learning, cultural exchange, and shared everyday life.
