Bežigrad Boarding School
Scheme design proposal for the complete renovation of interior common spaces
Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2014
Ten year renovation strategy.
Dormitory and a youth hostel.
Summer - winter scenario.
The aim of the project was a comprehensive inventory of existing facilities and the preparation of a meaningful strategy for future spatial development of the boarding school. During the summer months Bežigrad boarding school is used as a youth hostel, in order to supplement the income. So almost one quarter of the year the boarding school is functioning as a temporary and improvised youth hostel, when both functions should have equivalent functionality and quality use of space.
With the interventions the sleep and study cycle of the students is not interrupted by the social activities taking place in the common spaces. The interventions provide the educators with better overview of students’ activities. At the same time the building, when functioning as a hostel, can offer a pleasant experience by which the hostel and of course Ljubljana will be remembered by the visitors. The hostel should provide an experience, which is at least as good as in other comparable accommodation facilities in Ljubljana. With this in mind interventions are made in the dining room to create a cafe and a mini shop with Slovenian products, which should enrich visitor’s stay in the hostel.
